A 53-year old man from the Stephenville-Kippens area died Sunday night after his vehicle plunged over a steep cliff on Route 460 in Campbells Creek. The man was the lone occupant in the vehicle, which landed in the water in St. Georges’s Bay.

Sgt. Cathy Whitehead of the Bay St. George Detachment said the accident occurred at about 8:50 p.m.

Whitehead said the man’s body was recovered at about 11;15 p.m.

“We had to use a fisherman’s boat . We had some assistance from the community in going to get him,” she said and noted going by water was the only option available.

The RCMP was also assisted by the Marine Institute Safety and Emergency Response Training Centre (SERT) and the Stephenville Emergency Response Unit’s search and rescue team.

The vehicle is still in the water and Whitehead is uncertain of what will happen with it.

“We don’t need it for investigational purposes and there’s no collision on it and it will cost thousands to remove.”

She said what happens with it is kind of at a “who’s going to do what with it” stage.

Whitehead said police are still investigating to determine was caused the vehicle to go off the road and there will be an autopsy conducted on the man.

His name is not being released at this time.
